AIST January issueCIVS project “Modeling Scrap Melting in DC-EAF Operations Using CFD Simulations” was featured in the January Issue of Iron & Steel Technology. The technical paper was published in the category of AIST Transactions.

Authors of the paper include Shiyu Wang (CIVS Ph.D. student), Orlando Ugarte (CIVS Research Scientist), Sunday Abraham (SSAB), Yufeng Wang (SSAB), Randy Petty (SSAB), Ty Okosun (CIVS Associate Director for Research), and Chenn Zhou (CIVS Director).

The direct-current electric arc furnace (DC EAF) leverages direct current to produce an electric arc for heating and melting of scrap steel. The DC EAF importance lies in the increased production efficiency and optimized energy consumption that this technology can achieve. This project developed an integrated, comprehensive, 3D CFD model to investigate scrap melting processes in industrial-scale DC EAFs.
