Funding and Assistantships
No, Purdue University Northwest does not offer full funding for master’s programs. However, competitive students may receive support through Research Assistantships (RA) and Teaching Assistantships (TA), which fall under Graduate Assistantships (GA).
While assistantships are not guaranteed, many students receive them after demonstrating academic potential and a strong work ethic after their first semester. Faculty often select students who actively engage in research or coursework.
To increase your chances, proactively contact faculty with shared research interests. Attach your resume and statement of purpose, and highlight relevant coursework, projects or research experience. Networking during the first semester also helps, as professors observe your performance.
It’s uncommon but possible. Exceptional students with a strong background and relevant experience may be considered if a faculty member has funding and prior contact.
Since most scholarships are for domestic students, international applicants are encouraged to obtain scholarships from their home countries.
You can review faculty profiles and research interests on the Mechanical and Civil Engineering department website.
Grader and hourly positions may be available each semester, typically offered to students who have proven academic skills in the specific subject and are in good standing. You can inquire with your course instructor or academic advisor.
Registration and Study Plan
You must contact the Office of Graduate Studies (graduateschool@pnw.edu) and the director of the MCE graduate program to submit a formal request. Each case is reviewed individually.
Activate your PNW career account and contact your assigned academic advisor. They will help you develop a study plan and select courses.
International students are required to register for a minimum of 8 credit hours per semester to maintain visa compliance.
No. Each student works with their academic advisor to create a personalized study plan based on their academic goals and background.
Yes, international students can register online through the myPNW portal after consulting with their advisor and student ambassador.
Yes, but early registration is encouraged to secure preferred course slots. Delayed registration may limit your options.
Yes, with advisor approval, students may take interdisciplinary electives (e.g., from Electrical Engineering or Computer Science) that support their academic and career goals.
Graduate students may typically enroll in up to 12 credit hours per semester. Overloading beyond that may require advisor and department chair approval.
Besides myPNW, you will regularly use Brightspace (for coursework and class materials), Office 365 (for student email and tools), and other lab software if doing research. Familiarity with these systems helps streamline your academic life.
Accounts and Portals
Account activation instructions are included in your admission packet. You’ll need your Purdue University ID (PUID) to complete the setup.
