Inspired to serve: Meet PNW 2025 graduate Savannah Benitez

Savannah Benitez, BSB ’25, feels amazed and grateful for how far she has come during her academic career at Purdue University Northwest (PNW).
As a first-generation student from Hammond, Indiana, she remembers starting her college career as a shy, introverted Marketing major. By branching out to other faculty and staff members on campus, and with a little courage, she transformed into a personal guide and resource for other peers.
Benitez’s involvement has led her to work in PNW’s office of Student Life, join TRIO Student Support Services and serve as a peer mentor in the Honors College. From helping lead student organizations to participating twice with Study Away programs, her story is marked by the importance of taking advantage of available opportunities. Benitez’s PNW experience has even inspired her to one day work in higher education in service to others.
“You need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable,” she said. “I have been in so many situations where I had to do something outside of my comfort zone, but that is what will help set you up for success and growth. PNW offers so many opportunities to get involved, but you have to be ready to seek them out.”
It is nice to see so many friendly faces and make connections wherever you go. The people here want to see your success as a student.
Why did you choose to attend PNW?
“One of the main factors in my decision was that my brother went here, and it was close to home. Coming here, I knew I made the absolutely best decision. I would not change anything. This is the best first-gen university because of how supportive the faculty and staff are. PNW has felt like my home away from home, even if it is only 10 minutes away. From Student Life to TRIO, I see them as my second family. It is nice to see so many friendly faces and make connections wherever you go. The people here want to see your success as a student.”
Why did you choose your major?
“Ever since high school, I was interested in advertising. I thought it was really fun and creative. When I looked through majors here, Marketing is what stood out to me. The College of Business faculty have been amazing to me. They have really helped me succeed professionally and the skills I have gained through their courses have helped me be more confident.
Working in the office of Student Life allowed me to fill a role where I could apply that marketing knowledge. I not only made event flyers, but I also worked events and built my confidence in speaking with other people. When I first started making flyers, they were not as good. But I was able to develop and practice my own style that helped me advance my skills.”
What are your plans after graduation and long-term career goals?
“I will be pursuing my master’s degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs at Indiana University Bloomington. Working in PNW’s office of Student Life was just a spark for me. I really enjoyed helping guide other students, getting them involved on campus, and showing them there’s a place for you. I also see how there are so many different departments and where there is so much you can do to serve others. The higher education environment feels so close-knit and everyone feels like a family. If I can help advance someone’s career or be of any service or help, those are the moments I really enjoy.”
Was there anyone at PNW who inspired or encouraged you along the way?

“Sal is the best boss I have ever had. He has believed in me and helped me grow my confidence. He has been pivotal to my personal growth. He genuinely goes above and beyond for PNW students.”

“When I decided to join TRIO, Jorge was so helpful to me. He helped me navigate my college career, made me feel included, and was so helpful to me with my graduate school application and any questions I ever had.”
