About Ronald E. McNair

Ronald E. McNairRonald E. McNair, the second African American astronaut, was born in Lake City, South Carolina, and graduated as valedictorian from Carver High School. He earned a B.A. in Physics, magna cum laude, from North Carolina A&T State University and a Ph.D. in Physics from MIT.

Selected for NASA’s highly competitive astronaut program in 1978, he was recognized for his work in laser physics and received multiple honors, including three honorary doctorates. A sixth-degree black belt and accomplished saxophonist, Ronald McNair was married to Cheryl Moore McNair and had two children, Reginald and Joy Cheray. Tragically, he died on January 28, 1986, aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. His legacy continues to inspire generations of scholars and dreamers.

Honoring His Legacy

In honor of McNair’s memory, the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program was created and implemented nationally.

Historians often remember McNair as having much more to him than his academic accomplishments. Friends who knew him personally describe him as humble and grounded—never boastful about his achievements. They recall his deep commitments to God, his family and to the youth he encouraged to succeed. (Ebony Magazine, May 1986).
