PIVOT Program

PIVOT – Planning Instruction for Varied Offering Types

PIVOT is a collaboration of the Center for Faculty Excellence and the Office of Instructional Technology, designed to provide faculty with the necessary knowledge and skills to make planned, and perhaps unplanned, pivots in instructional format.

PIVOT Program

Program Overview

Faculty participating in PIVOT will work with a faculty peer mentor and a student instructional technology consultant to re-design a course to be offered in a different instructional format using Brightspace (e.g., online – asynchronous, online – synchronous, or hybrid).  Participants will be provided a Brightspace course template to streamline their course development process.

Faculty participants will:

  • Implement effective course design principles as the foundation of their courses regardless of instructional format.
  • Develop modified instructional plans based on announced/anticipated instructional format decisions and in consideration of student characteristics.
  • Create an online course presence in Brightspace to deliver and/or support instruction and student learning.
  • Use Brightspace tools to engage and communicate with students.

Full-time faculty who successfully complete the PIVOT program will receive $500 professional development funds.

Program Schedule

The PIVOT program includes 3 days of instruction (conducted virtually), 2 weeks of supported work time, and a final half-day to share courses and receive peer feedback from colleagues.

PIVOT will be offered four times during Summer 2020 as listed below; each session can accommodate up to 25 participants.

Through this self-paced course, faculty will…

  • Implement effective course design principles as the foundation of your courses regardless of instructional format.
  • Develop modified instructional plans based on announced/anticipated instructional format decisions and in consideration of student characteristics.
  • Identify strategies to communicate with and engage students in the learning process.
