Respect Boundaries

Sexual Violence Awareness Program

Purdue Northwest is committed to maintaining a positive and safe environment free from all forms of harassment, including sexual harassment.

In addition, the University complies with several federal laws, including the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination (SaVE) Act. SaVE requires students to receive primary prevention and education awareness about sexual violence. PNW provides Respect Boundaries online training to new incoming and transfer students via our Learning Management System, BrightSpace.

Respect Boundaries consists of four modules:

  • Purdue University Policies and Procedures
  • Risk Reduction and Prevention
  • Relationship Violence
  • Supporting Survivors: Resources and Services

Please contact the Office of the Dean of Students at dos@pnw.edu or call the Hammond campus (219) 989-4141 or the Westville campus (219) 785-5230 for questions regarding the Respect Boundaries Program.

FAQs

New, transfer and graduate students at Purdue University Northwest must complete Respect Boundaries. This includes online-only and non-degree students enrolled in professional courses. Also, if you have taken some time away from PNW, you may have to complete the program again as government guidance has changed.

Respect Boundaries covers topics such as harassment and stalking, which can and do occur online. It is important for you as an online student to recognize these actions, which are violations of PNW policy and to know where to go for support and resources should you experience online harassment or cyberstalking.

The Campus Sexual Violence Elimination (SaVE) Act, a federal law, requires all new, transfer, and graduate students to receive primary prevention and awareness education about sexual violence. In compliance with this law, new students are required to complete the Respect Boundaries: Sexual Violence Awareness Program. The program emphasizes PNW’s commitment to a safe campus environment and each student’s shared responsibility, as a member of the community, to help foster a safe campus environment.

Yes. While much of the content is the same for all three campuses, there are differences at each campus, such as the resources available and where to report harassment.

The law requiring this course does not distinguish between one-time, part-time, in-person, or online students. You are required to complete it as a student at Purdue University Northwest. You will receive a registration hold if it is not completed by the designated deadline, and you won’t be able to register for other courses in the future until you complete Respect Boundaries.

Respect Boundaries will appear in Brightspace approximately the first week of the fall semester for any new, transfer, and graduate students. Respect Boundaries is required to be completed by the designated deadline every fall and spring semester.

There are four short modules associated with the program that cover the following topics:

  • Applicable policies across campus
  • Guidance on how to be an active bystander to help prevent sexual violence and how to help a survivor of sexual violence who may seek support from students
  • Relationship violence
  • Resources and support options that are available on campus and in the community for survivors of sexual violence

The mandatory training is available via our Purdue System Learning Management System, D2L Brightspace.  To access the training please visit here and click the gold button that says “Log In to Brightspace.” Be sure to select the “Purdue Northwest” option and use your Purdue Login to log in.
