Resources for Researchers

PNW’s Sponsored Programs team supports faculty and staff throughout the sponsored-project lifecycle—from identifying funding opportunities and developing competitive proposals to managing awards and navigating research compliance requirements.

We collaborate with investigators and university partners to promote responsible research, facilitate successful projects and advance PNW’s research mission.

Find Funding Opportunities

Research Resources

Purdue Excellence in Research Administration (PERA), has been established to streamline the research grant application process for all Purdue faculty. Through the Office of Research, PERA is implementing a new suite of software to modernize research-related business processes and technologies.

PERA is Purdue’s name for the Huron Research Suite, a next generation system that automates many processes required to apply for research grants, managing research funding, and applying to regulatory committees such as those responsible for the oversight of research with human subjects, vertebrate animals or biohazards and compliance practices.

Proposal Initiation at Purdue

The Proposal Information Portal (PIP) has been replaced by the Purdue Excellence in Research Administration system (PERA).

To initiate a proposal with Pre-Award: Create a new Funding Proposal within the PERA system.

Login to the Grants module to begin: https://pera.research.purdue.edu/
Instructions for creating a new Funding Proposal can be found here: https://pera.research.purdue.edu/training/prep-submit-review/create-proposal-investigator/

REMINDER: Initial notification of a proposal must be completed 15 business day prior to the deadline per the Proposal Deadline Policy.

Proposal Deadline Policy

Pre-Award Phased Timeline

Sufficient time is required to assemble, review, and submit grant applications to meet sponsor requirements. With the growing number of faculty at Purdue that are submitting proposals and the increased sponsor complexities this policy will allow Pre-Award time to adequately support preparation of applications and to thoroughly review applications for compliance requirements.

Proposal Deadline StagesDue to Pre-Award
1. Initiation Stage3 weeks (15 business days) in advance
2. Admin Stage (Non-Scientific Documents)1 week (5 business days) in advance
3. Science Stage (Scientific Documents)2 business days (16 hours) in advance

Anything received after the stated number of days prior to the sponsor deadline or desired submission date will require completion and approval of an exception form in order to be able to submit.  Any sponsor deadline after 5:00pm should be considered due at 5:00pm.

Our team provides post-award support to help investigators manage sponsored projects responsibly and effectively. We assist with account establishment, financial monitoring, reporting requirements, allowable-cost questions, award modifications, subawards, prior approvals, and project closeout.

PI Responsibility and Expectations

Responsibility for setting the direction of research at Purdue University lies with the faculty. A principal investigator is typically a member of the faculty who bears responsibility for the intellectual leadership of a project. He/she accepts overall responsibility for directing the research, financial oversight of the funding, as well as compliance with relevant University policies, federal regulations, and sponsor terms and conditions of an award. This includes research grants, cooperative agreements, training or service projects, clinical studies, and other sponsored projects. PIs do not have the authority to execute contracts or agreements on behalf of Purdue University but do have the responsibility for the following items:

Reviewing Your Account Balance

GM AIMS is an online reporting tool that allows Purdue Faculty and Staff to review grant budget, expenditure, and balance information. Faculty can view complete grant details when they are listed as the PI and individual accounts when they are listed as the co-PI. Administrative staff who are assisting the PI can also be given access. Additional information about this portal can be found at the following link:

Each active PI will receive a monthly email reminder from their Post Award Manager to review their grant financial statements through AIMS. It is an expectation that this review will take place at least monthly to allow sufficient time to adjust the project or make necessary corrections within the allowable allotment of time.

PNW is committed to conducting research responsibly, ethically, and securely. We help researchers understand applicable training, disclosure, regulatory, and research security requirements and connect them with the appropriate university resources for human subjects, animal research, export controls, conflicts of interest, responsible conduct of research, and other compliance areas.
